In collaboration with Workforce Development Global Alliance, Pennsylvania Women Work launched Pittsburgh Family Connections, a program designed to equip families in Pittsburgh’s Northside neighborhood with tools and training that will allow them to maturely handle conflict, provide stable family environments, and understand the value of education.

Many families living in Pittsburgh’s Northside neighborhood lack education which, in turn, leads to high unemployment, poverty, and violence. The graduation rate in the area is 38 percent, meaning many young people are both out of school and out of work. The Northside’s high incidents of shootings and homicides make it one of Pittsburgh’s most dangerous neighborhoods, with one of the highest crime rates in the city.

Pittsburgh Family Connections gives household family units the skills and knowledge they need to work together and provide better futures for themselves and their community.

To qualify, a family must:

  • Live in a Pittsburgh neighborhood.
  • Be living at or below twice the poverty line.
  • Include a high school drop out and/or graduates with No career plans.

Goals of the program include:

  • Providing career development services to adult and youth family members.
  • Improving the communication skills of participants.
  • Equipping family members with conflict resolution and specialized workforce training.
  • Placing participants in training and employment

The program will run for a total of 12 months and will include career development classes, computer training, job placement services, and ongoing family activities. Additionally, participants will receive support in finishing the GED, if necessary, and are eligible to obtain a discounted bus pass and have access to clothing for interviews and work.
