Mentoring Online and Resources for Employment (MORE)

Program Goals/Mission:

  • To connect women with each other to share advice, resources, networks and encouragement
  • To provide support in an online community for women working towards economic self-sufficiency and other career goals
  • To expand participants’ knowledge and experience using e-mail and websites

How Does the Program Work?
Participants should be referred to the MORE program by New Choices Career Development Services or complete an intake interview with PA Women Work to determine eligibility for the program. Participants must register with PA Women Work in order to ask mentoring questions. Click here for a MORE participant registration form. Once registered, participants will receive instructions on how to email their questions to the MORE program manager. The questions will then be emailed to all mentors. If you would like to participate as a mentor, please click here for a MORE mentor registration form. Answers will be emailed to the participant and both the question and answer will be posted on the mentoring website. Visitors to the website may also leave relevant comments to the questions. PA WORKWEAR/McKeesport

Program Goals/Mission:

  • To provide fashionable and appropriate interview clothing for women and men seeking employment
  • To provide fashionable and appropriate employment for clothing women and men starting new jobs or training programs
  • To boost participants’ self-esteem and self-image and provide support in their job search or new job

How Does the Program Work?
Participants are referred to the program by the Department of Public Welfare or other community partners. To find out if you qualify or to learn more about our other referral agencies, please call 412-281-9240. Individuals must call to schedule an appointment after we have received their referral.  Each client will receive individual assistance in picking out necessary clothing for their interview or job. The quantity of clothing depends on the kind of clothing needed. Specialty clothing such as scrubs, non-skid shoes, chef’s uniforms and black pants/white shirts are part of our wardrobe, in addition to business professional and business casual attire.

Beaver County New Choices
in partnership with Beaver county community college

Program Goals/Mission:

  • To help dislocated workers to get back on their feet and ready to re-enter the workforce
  • To help displaced homemakers to recognize transferable skills to be able to enter the workforce
  • To build confidence, assertiveness, time management and goal setting skills
  • To learn or improve computer skills (typing, Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint)
  • To increase awareness of one’s own abilities and to assist in making satisfying career choices

How Does the Program Work?
New Choices is a series of free workshops on goal setting, career planning, stress reduction techniques, time management, assertiveness, resume writing, interview techniques and job search skills. The classes are limited in number to provide an intimate setting. One on one resume reviews and job placement assistance is available throughout and following the program. Computer classes are optional and are offered in addition to the core component of the program, the career development sessions.

Transportation Assistance Program

Program Goals/Mission:

  • To provide discounted bus passes to individuals in a job search or employment training program

How Does the Program Work?
PA Women Work provides monthly bus passes for individuals referred by the New Choices Career Development Services programs, Carlow University Community Education Office and Bidwell Training Center to eligible individuals who live in Allegheny County. Exceptions to these referrals are made in case of emergency.

Neighborhood Assistance Program (job placement assistance)
Program Goals/Mission:

  • To provide one on one, individualized job placement assistance to individuals who seeking employment or better employment
  • To assist in one on one resume writing
  • To provide interview techniques and mock interviews as necessary

How Does the Program Work?
PA Women Work provides individual job placement assistance to people referred by the New Choices Career Development Services programs in the greater Pittsburgh region.

COMMUNITY VOICE MAIL Program

Program Goals/Mission:

  • To provide a free voice mail box for PA Women Work clients who do not have reliable phone service in order to help them to receive messages from potential employers, landlords, health care providers, child care providers, case managers and providers of critical human services

How Does the Program Work?
PA Women Work will enroll clients who request a voice mail box. They will be given a unique phone number and can record their own message on the voice mail. This phone number can be used until a more permanent phone number can be obtained by the client or until the client requests termination of the service.

TECHNICAL ASSISTANCE PROGRAMS

Participation in non-traditional employment initiatives
Program Goals/Mission:

  • To advocate for employment and training opportunities in non-traditional employment fields for women and men (women in male dominated fields and men in female dominated fields)
  • To help employers to recruit individuals for non-traditional employment fields
  • To provide emotional and mentoring support for individuals pursuing these careers

How Does the Program Work?
PA Women Work participates with statewide and national organizations on these issues, including participation in NAPE, STEM programs and apprenticeship councils.

Technical Assistance for New Choices career development services

Program Goals/Mission:

  • To increase the visibility of all New Choices Career Development Services programs across the state
  • To improve their partnerships with businesses and increase employment opportunities for students of these programs

How Does the Program Work?
PA Women Work works directly with the New Choices Career Development Services project directors and the PA Dept of Education and Labor and Industry to provide trainings, support and networks.
